Asthma & Blood Donation

Asthma is a common condition. According to EKEA, see what applies in relation to blood donation.

Excluded if:

  • The blood donor is accidental during blood sampling
  • Takes or has completed a course of medication with steroids (oral or intravenous) lasting more than 3 weeks in the last 6 months
  • The donor has received long-term treatment (over 6 months) with steroids (oral or intravenous) within the last 12 months
  • The donor has been receiving short-term treatment (less than 3 weeks) with steroids (p.o or iv) in the last 7 days.

It can be accepted (as the case may be) if b), c), d) do not apply and the prospective blood donor is asymptomatic during blood sampling even if he is receiving systematic preventive treatment, including inhaled steroids.
